May 03, 2011

Senior Scientists and Engineers, a AAAS partner organization, focuses on bringing retired scientists and researchers into classrooms to help teachers. In an April event, “STEM Professionals and K-12 Schools: Partnerships for Change,” members of this organization were part of a panel discussing the program.

Volunteers described their work in the schools and classrooms. They emphasized the relevance and usefulness they can bring to the students. They also discussed why personality is important in matching a scientist and the teacher so that they get along and share the responsibility. The potential benefits of this program are discussed, along with ideas to increase participation.
