In the suburbs of Alexandria, Virginia, when the car horns, sirens and airplane sounds fade away, the songs of birds fill the air. Despite the large human populations around urban metropolitan centers, we know surprisingly little about how these environments impact the animals and birds that live there. AAAS member Peter Marra, research scientist at the The Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, wants to change that.
